Modern Day Utopias

In reflecting on our discussion in class on utopia and dystopia works (literature, movies, etc.), can you think of any modern day attempts to create utopia? What are the implications? Indications of dystopia?

Wow! Are you all in for a shock when we do some research into modern day utopias!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are (and have been) many people who find the world/communities they live in to be too imperfect to suit their needs. As a result they go off as an individual or as a group to attempt to establish what they envision as their own perfect world. Some of these groups are known as fanatics or cults while others are just seen as people with ideas that don't fit into the mainstream of their society (you know, like being a vegetarian! ;)).

Those who have posted seem to be looking to an entire country or the world as incapable of being a utopia. Attempts at utopia are often about smaller groups of people with a common vision/life philosophy working towards a common goal. These groups are not necessarily about changing the entire world all at once. Their focus is smaller and more within their control.

I think the research that we will be doing with this unit will prove to be quite enlightening for all of us!
